A Monthly Family Budget of Cevdet Pasha

Abstract

In this study, according to the expense notebook dated 1887, a part of the daily life of Cevdet Pasha, Ottoman famous lawman and statesman of 19th century, is examined. First, the expenses written day by day have been classified, then the kinds of expenditures, were shown as tables. The expenses included in this classification, are food expenses, clothing, kitchenware and houseware, transportation and the salaries paid for housekeepers. According to the knowledge obtained from the expense notebook, some information about the daily life of İstanbul was given with regard to the daily life of Cevdet Pasha and his family.
