Abstract

Nezihe Meriç argues the change of women in Turkish society from the 1930s to the 1990s in her play Sevdican. Social change based on economic developments creates various women characteristics during this process. This drama covers traditional, cheated, alienated, degenerated belligerent and individualized women characteristics. In the play traditional woman is the proto-type of all, while individualized woman is successor of the other characters. In a sense, the writer tells the process of Turkish female individualization. Inside this story the woman appears as wife, mother, employer and individual. The educated woman who is the result of modern life finally realizes herself as an individual.
